The striking images seen here are a form of art called Scratchboard. The board is similar to masonite, with a layer of white kaolin clay and then a layer of black India ink. 

With a pointed tool, the subject is etched through the black top layer into the white clay underneath.

Layers of watercolor are then used to build up the luminous color.

A sprayed coat of fixative gives the pieces a hard coating and really makes the colors “pop”.
