ABOUT THE ARTIST
Sandra works in a variety of mediums, concentrating now on oil and pencil. Women of the West, cowboys, wildlife and landscapes are her primary topics.
“I can’t remember a time when I didn’t draw. When other children colored in coloring books, I was making my own.” Haynes’ father did everything possible to encourage her talent and interest in wildlife. “My first pets as a child—courtesy of him—were a fox and two skunks,” she recalls. “He was always bringing something wild home so I could study it for a couple of weeks, then let it go. With camera in hand, Sandra has tracked and studied wildlife of all kinds and has had the opportunity to see many little known or seen behaviors in the wild. She has also spent most of her life around horses and has had the opportunities to be behind the scene with her own horses and clients horses in training, at race tracks, rodeos, show rings, cow cuttings and on working ranches.
One of her favorite lifelong hobbies include firearms competitions, where she has been winning since the age of 12. She now competes exclusively in black powder events when time allows.
Sandra hikes the rugged country of Eastern Oregon whenever possible and takes photographs and paints on location throughout the Western states. But art will always be her life force and it is her great pleasure when people recognize the expression of animal and human alike and the knowledge that goes into each of her paintings.
Sandra lives by the following thought:
“Most of us go to our graves with our music still inside us. My journey on earth has been forever shaped by the ability to draw and so, with great pleasure, I will dedicate the rest of my life to creating my “music”.
Awards include Best–of-Show and People’s Choice at the Phippen Western Show in Prescott, AZ; The 49’ers Show in Death Valley, CA.; The Western Heritage Show in GreatFalls, MT; The Ellensburg National in Ellensburg,WA; and many other Best of Category and Poster awards. |

“It’s nice to see people’s reactions to a painting that reminds them of something in their past, or of someplace they would like to be.” quote from East Oregonian Dec. 2007 |

‘On a recent cold, snowy morning Sandra sets up her easel in the woods about 20 miles from Heppner. She is there for a bit of “en plein aire” painting in outdoor daylight.’ excerpt from East Oregonian Dec. 2007

Being an artist is such a glamorous life. It was just as cold as it looks! |

Bringing cattle down out of the mountains. This country goes on forever and if you don’t have a good sense of direction, it could be easy to get lost in these draws. |

A long, steep hike to the top of Little Baldy for the chance to see a really spectacular view. I’m writing a note to put in the mailbox that is mounted on the tree. Notes left there go back more than 60 years! |
