Musings of an unhinged mind.
A KICK IN THE SEAT OF CREATIVITY
Hi friends,
With the chance to take a long weekend off, it stretched into 8 days. Was it burnout from the art? I always miss not doing any art work, but in this case I think it was just time to step outside this world and see what was out there.
By definition, doing art is pretty solitary and I embrace this without any problem, to the point of getting a bit isolated. Has this happened to you?
So a few days at vintage car races, even to the point of working in the timing tower, was a pretty far departure from what I usually do. Then some time watching television, reading newspapers and talking about social events came next. Not a big thing to most of you maybe, but I live without any of those things, so it is always a treat and necessary to keep me informed of a few happenings in the world. Lest you think I am totally a hermit, I do get a news magazine from The Netherlands that keeps me up on world events and read some news on the computer from AP.
Then I went with a friend to a "designer mall" where he picked out some really nice kitchen appliances. While he was conducting business, I picked up some architect-design type magazines.....you know.....with the type of really high end homes way-outside-my-thinking kind of thing.
As I thumbed through these beautiful magazines, admiring what could be done with homes and decorating materials, the creative processes turned on without warning. Ideas for artwork that were usually outside my thinking came at a furious pace. Some may prove to be a little impractical to actually execute, but all were interesting.
Lately my art has started down some new paths and is evolving.....not exactly as I thought it would, but the ride is interesting so far. Have you reached a point where you are willing to take chances with your art? Many of you already do, I would imagine.
This may not sound all that risky to you, but the humor that is creeping into some of my Automotive Memorabilia art has gotten a great reception by car and non-car people alike, even with limited showing so far. Now, instead of quite so much realism in my art, I am exploring where my mind really wants to go with other aspects of what could be created. Somewhat more traditional art will always be part of what I want to do (I think), but why shouldn't there be room for some really creative, fantasy work too?
What seemed like a really weird place to jog my creativity has let something loose that is rather unexpected.
So be prepared to be surprised anywhere and keep a notebook handy. Write it all down, even things that seem a little too far out there, or would be hard to execute. The next turn in your path may provide the answer.
Keep Coloring Outside the Lines,
Sandra
