Musings of an unhinged mind.
How old is too old?
Hi friends,
After a long absence from blog writing, a subject that has been on my mind for awhile is jumping up and down, demanding to be let out of my mind.
Are you an older artist? I am....though I've been on the scene for awhile.
Observing an aging population has pointed out a definite division of attitude in older people....the ones that decide it's time to get old....you know, giving in to a body that doesn't have the stamina it used to. Or the intrepid folks that power through it all, but allow a little more time to get it done.
If you're starting on this journey, following the artist's calling, do you hesitate to start something REALLY BIG? Learning your craft will take a lifetime. Maybe you feel that it's too huge an undertaking to start at a late date in your life.
Have you ever said or thought that you couldn't do or learn something because you're "just too old"? Remove that phrase from your vocabulary immediately!
None of us know when we will attain our expiration date, but if it's 20 years from now, wouldn't you be kicking yourself for putting off the huge project and just deciding it's time to get old? (What the heck is "old" anyway?)
Lately I've thought on this rather a lot as I contemplate a REALLY BIG project. The kind that scares the heck out of me. But you know, scaring myself silly has been a sure indication throughout my life that I'm kicking out the sides of my own personal box.
This project involves a passport and a trip to China......details to come later, but it will have meetings with dignitaries, university demo class teaching, setting up a business, possible TV appearance and more. Much more.
Then setting up showings of a body of work here and speaking engagements........
And getting into outdoor art festivals in this country.....I do mostly larger indoor shows now.
Plans are also under way for several other projects.....no, I don't know where the time will come from or how I will pull this off, but the point is, I've made the decision to charge full speed ahead. After a brief few days thinking how nice it would be to lie around a sunny beach with a fruity drink in hand.
Then I remember that I've never in my life wanted to do that.
This is directed to all the older artists that might be reading, and to you younger ones that aspire to getting older......I wish you were close by where I could give you all a huge hug and hold a group session now and then to talk about the interesting process of getting older.
So, with my favorite phrase....."just get out there and do it", playing like a loop recording in my head, I'm headed to the studio. New paintings are wanting to make an appearance!
All my best,
Sandra
