Musings of an unhinged mind.
Finding your authentic self
"You were born an original, don't die a copy".
~John Mason
With a lot introspection, eventually an artist finds their "voice", their true self, a style of creating art that is their own. To be authentic takes a lot of searching, trying out different ways of painting...copying, if you will, until gradually your recognizable style begins to emerge.
Do you see this as a reflection of finding who you truly are? With so many directives in the world to "fit in", to do something in a prescribed manner, to have everyone "like you", one day do you finally realize that you have lost yourself in the ordinariness of it all?
Does your art follow the same course that you are living your life....fitting in, being liked, being ordinary?
Then what happens one day if you decide to create without fear, without worrying whether anyone will like what is authentic to you? It's frightening being memorable. There are a lot of people out there that will not like what you do and will be happy to tell you. Critics, whether it's your Mother, a national audience, or the negative little voice in your head, strive to hold you back.
What, exactly, do you have to lose? If you can come up with excuses not to try something, think of each thing and ask yourself, is that really true?
Think about this:
"It's like, at the end, there's this surprise quiz: am I proud of me?
I gave my life to become the person I am right now!
Was it worth the price paid?
~Richard Bach
